Boost Your Home’s Comfort and Energy Efficiency with Secondary Window Glazing

If you’re looking to enhance the comfort and energy efficiency of your home without the cost of replacing windows, Secondary Window Glazing could be the perfect solution. This innovative system converts your existing windows to perform like high-quality double glazing. By installing plastic panels over your current windows, you can block drafts, reduce noise, and create a more comfortable living space—all while cutting down on energy bills. Here's everything you need to know about secondary glazing and a detailed guide to installing it yourself.

Why Choose Secondary Glazing?

Secondary glazing offers multiple benefits for homeowners:

  1. Cost Savings: Instead of replacing your windows entirely, secondary glazing allows you to double glaze your windows for a fraction of the price.
  2. Energy Efficiency: By trapping a layer of still air between your existing window and the secondary glazing panel, this system significantly reduces heat loss, keeping your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
  3. Condensation Control: The glazing helps eliminate condensation inside the window, creating a healthier environment in your home.
  4. Noise Reduction: Whether you live on a busy street or near a noisy area, secondary glazing can effectively dampen outside noise, giving you a quieter, more peaceful living space.

How Does Secondary Glazing Work?

Secondary glazing is made from premium acrylic sheets, which are lightweight, strong, and UV-resistant. These acrylic panels are attached to your existing windows using a magnetic system, which allows the panels to be easily installed and removed as needed. The trapped air between the original window and the secondary glazing acts as an insulator, reducing heat loss and sound transmission.

A Step-by-Step Guide to Fitting Secondary Glazing

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you install secondary glazing on your own:

Materials You Will Need:

  • Acrylic PLEXIGLAS Sheets: Choose the correct thickness (3mm for smaller windows, 4mm for larger ones).
  • Magnetic Tape Kit: Includes 15m of tape (Type A - brown magnetic and Type B - white steel) and will be cut to size based on your window dimensions.
  • Measuring tape, snips/scissors, pencil, notepad, fine-toothed wood saw (if trimming is necessary), cloth, degreaser like methylated spirits.

Step 1: Measure Your Window

Use a measuring tape to take accurate measurements of both the width and height of your window frame. Allow 20mm of space for the magnetic tape on each side. Make sure to mark these points clearly on the window frame.

Step 2: Order Your Glazing Panel

Once you have your measurements, order your acrylic sheet online and select the cut-to-size option for precision.

Step 3: Prepare the Glazing Panel

Keep the protective film on the acrylic sheet until you are ready to fit it. This will prevent scratches during the process. Cut the magnetic tape (both Type A and Type B) to fit the edges of the acrylic panel.

Step 4: Install the Magnetic Tape

Remove the protective backing from the Type A magnetic tape (brown) and attach it around the edge of the acrylic panel. Ensure the tape is applied evenly without overlapping. Cut and attach the Type B steel tape (white) to the window frame, ensuring that it aligns perfectly with the Type A tape on the panel.

Step 5: Clean and Prepare the Window Frame

Use a cloth and a degreaser like methylated spirits to clean the window frame thoroughly. This will help the magnetic tape adhere properly.

Step 6: Fit the Glazing Panel

Carefully align the acrylic panel with the window frame, using support or a second person if needed. Once in position, lightly press the panel against the frame to ensure it’s seated correctly. Apply firm pressure along the edges to secure the panel in place using your fingers or a narrow wallpaper roller.

Step 7: Final Touches

Slowly remove the protective film from the outside of the acrylic panel to avoid static build up. If static attracts dust, clean the surface with furniture polish and a microfiber cloth.

By following these steps, you can enjoy the benefits of double glazing at a fraction of the cost, all while making your home more energy-efficient and comfortable. Plus, the entire system is easy to remove and replace, giving you flexibility in maintaining your windows.
